I just check the issue myself right now. Here is what I found.
It all depends where you're going.   Some areas of the USA covered by just one network. The network with the best signal, but it doesn't work--Hey VERIZON with a SIM card, and is relatively expensive because they have plans for random users meet PREPAID.
There are areas such as Vermont that virzon is the only company.   An option which I used last year is to buy PREPAID-phone without charge, such as mango. Actually it was really cheap cost at Wal-Mart and phone charger 18$ than $ 10 airtime. From what I read they essentially subsidize the phone on time. I bought this for CINGULAR's network (now changed their name to NEW AT&T) and call it a GOPHONE.   This is really a good idea if you use random does not speak more than a day or two a week. The problem with PREPAID is their cover. I usually can find recorded min once a week on the PCT, but in parts of the Eastern United States like Maine and Vermont was received. Massachusetts South was almost continuous signal on apalch trail.
The truth is not yet decided whether to charge my phone with money (I have three days to decide before I lose my number permanently), that's probably where I'll be this year will not be recorded. So basically have the option I reload the phone now and give your phone (just returns $ 25 and receive free phone and charger that matches the voltage of the United States). Dooch got should that claim of $ give $ 5 bonus (total $ 100 that get to the claim). I haven't decided yet, and I don't know if you are interested.   The problem is that if you're on PREPAID phone and talk every day as we should, because even in my program it is $ 1.00 per day per day is 10 cents a minute. The problem is they're not phones PREPAID is a fabric they require at least a one-year contract and boot allowance, and therefore six months with them is very expensive.
I wouldn't go with your SIM card, that they kill you. I'm talking about more than a dollar per minute.   Cheaper even buy the PREPAID as I have and take the SIM card (that's on my GOPHONE).
Tip: If you want to call, you dial the number, assuming he has caller ID, cuts of at least 30 seconds (and therefore don't require you) then waiting to call you. That way you will have to pay only for airtime (10 cents a minute in my case) rather than a call to Israel (39 cents per minute) which is much cheaper if you have a good international program to Israel.

Incidentally, you can find coverage maps at sites of all cellular company.

Cell phone abroad for emergencies only. You can always sends SMS with a phone number where you are public or simply dial with calling card, what's the rush? Messages received from free country and costing $ 1-1.5 and once again, what's the rush? To disconnect.

If you are going to call us recount in this once already. See Ronnie's right.

Summary: where are you going on a walk or trip? Work? In the village? In the city?

JHaJHa down to mobile, set the house number and other numbers with you as a friend, and numbers speak at minimum cost.

Sorry it took me a while to respond, but I had to find out some things about my cell phone.
For one thing, he can't help you because if I restart it, the novelty was three months so that the phone was expired until you can use it.

About the possibilities for using cell phones on the PCT.   That's actually pretty much looked upon. I see two main options, depending on your budget:
The best slolorit on the PCT is without doubt VERIZON:

Even with some parts like the Sierra not be recorded for a week if you're not going to the picture box.
VERIZON's main problem is that they don't have atrkiviot in options as emergency phone (at least they didn't have six months ago when I checked). The PREPAID option which is the option you want don't really exist with Verizon. Their cheapest option was there. + for every day, even if you don't call. Which means that during the trip will pay $ 150 minimum even if one minute.

A much more attractive option is PREPAID CINGULAR's (changing the name to NEW AT&T but people still remembered as CINGULAR)

I wrote about this option above.
If PREPAID option-say you buy minutes in advance, and there are no monthly fees or postage format number.
But if you're not using minutes preset time, you lose them. For example, in the case of best buy GOPHONE minutes at 25 who are good for three months, which means all your THRUHIKE will cost you $ 45 (buying the phone = 20 + twice buying $ 25 airtime) and include $ 60 airtime for use within 7 months (assuming you start the minute you buy new once you run out of minutes asleep)
The absorption of bad sex GOPHONE's Verizon's, but still found recorded almost every week, possibly up to 10 days in Southern Oregon. Don't know how the Washington reception, I think as good as (map of areas of the website, note that you need the map of gophon and regular service).   Anyway more to ease phone the parents than anything else, because it's almost going to be there in the travel with Verizon's cell phone, to help you during emergencies.   BTW, nice to take mobile even if no signal that if you get lost and find you can locate you by telephone. It seems to me, but it's only useful advice for the winter when people get stuck in the snow, that the PCT during the summer, there are always more people, if something happens to you and begin looking for you until you die or to get going on your own.

BTW, I forgot to mention that phones are becoming more and more scarce and more expensive, simply because aslolerim is so common now. They still are in towns without cellular, but others sometimes hard to find a payphone works.
