I love Your pictures, but maybe You could add when You have a chance a few more pictures of the average terrain Your encountering, and not only the highlights, so we can get an Idea how diffcult the trail is...

hi!
Dont have much internet time now. But I'll be in Auckland city and will upload pics and update properly.
I just wanted to tell you all that today I had to cross the Bream channel as part of the trail and I saw 12 Killer Whales!!!! They were amazing. Swam right next to me.
I have videos which I will try and upload soon. That was amazing.
Got to Waipu. 408 km. 14 days of walking. not too bad.

Hi all,
Arrived at Auckland city yesterday after 19 days of walking, 1 zero days for getting supplies and forwarding packeges and about 600km.
Zammi, regarding your questions... I am currently a guest of the people that are in charge of the trail and that run the whole show. Its amazing to see it behind the scenes.
The trail is rough...this is not the trails in the usa and not europe. More important it is still in its virgin form and it will take time to complete it.
1. I am walking alone. only a handfull of people have walked the trail and a few are walking it now and I met one of them. He will not last long. the others are not really thru hikers and are doing it slowly and taking long breaks. they also cut a lot of the road margins short.
2.Nobody is on the trail. In the bush you sometimes dont see anyone for days. But if you plan it correctly you can reach a town or a village at the end of each day. (depends on the walking pace)
3.sleep in the wild or in organized camping grounds or huts or backpackers. (depends where u are)
4. Purifying water depends on the water source. nothing new about that. a lot of farms in the area means cow sh*t...
5.supplies in town. some have very limited shops. I am making a detailed list of all of this. and u can find data on the trail website.
6. Risks? The bush. take a gps. it will make life much easier.
I managed with a compass and maps but it is not easy.

Got to Waitomo. The famous caves with glowing worms.
Been through a lot of beautiful mountain ranges of the central north island. The next week will be the climax of that: Hauhungaroa, Tongariroand & Taranaki (Off trail side trip) ranges.
900km behind me. 29 days of walking.5 zero days so far.
A lot of mud and sudden rain showers on the ridges.
But only for a few hours.

Hi all,
A lot has happened in the past month. The weather has been
crazy as hell. Just finished walking the north island. 1500km. Moving to the south island tomorrow.
The trail is roughly formed and needs a lot of work.
The best part was the Tongariro National park and the volcanoes.
Hopefully the south island is as spectacular as they say.

Hi Zammi!
I'll try and answer as much as I can.
1. You need to treat water againt Bacteria sometimes. But I only needed it a few times. Just think about the source of the water. In the north island there are a lot of towns and villages so you can fill water there.
2.Food, you have a lot of supermarkets in the towns and villages and I wrote in the beggining of this thread that I use the freeze dry meals when I'm out in the bush.
I am doing food drops to local postshops along the way.
3. you have huts and shelters in parts of the trail. and you can sleep in all sorts of accommodations when you are in a town. From a budget backpacker to a hotel.
4. no snakes in New zealand. Thats the best thing. There are mosquitos and sand flies but they are not that bad.
5. nobody is walking the trail. The trail is unformed and not officially opened.
I know there is a local couple that is sort of walking it now, and there was a wyoming couple that began but I have no idea whats going on with them.
6.The Kiwis (New Zealanders) are probably the best hosts I have ever met in all my travels. They are a hiking nation and they are really warm hearted.
7. Hights go from sea level to 2000m. But when you go over a 1000m usually it gets windy and cold. Dont forget this is close to Antarctica.
8. The trail is steep and a lot of ups and downs. Medium difficulty for me.
9. My bag is about 9.5 kg with food and water.
I will publish a list of gear when I'm done along with my conclusions of the trail as a whole.
10. Temperaturs vary greatly. Depends on the area you are in. It can get to minus at night.
11. I am averaging about 35-40 km a day. Which is a lot for this trail. The trail is steep and a lot of PUDS.
12. I dont know about the money yet. I'll conclude when I finish the south island. It can be a really cheap trail. Food is expensive in NZ.

Hi,
Walked the northern part of the south island until Arthur's pass NP. Absolutely amazing and beautiful.
Been walking with a dutch triple crowner called TOEK. (Rony, u probably know his trail name)
I've upload the pics till now. less than 1000km to finish.
Going for the crossing of the main divide next and from there the road is open for Mt. Aspiring NP and the Fiordland.
Expect to finish at the beginning of March.
Oh, and by the way...I have a trail name. Yeti. Go figure. Weird Triple Crowners.

Unless his old trail name was apple pie and he used to be a women in his past.
But then, there are now a few dozen new triple crowners every year.
Very few Te Araroa vetrans, though
