שאלה מארה"ב, היכנם מוזמנים להתייחס , אפשר בעברית..
Hi - I am a 48 year old high schol teacher from the US. I speak
hebrew and have a lot of hiking experience (kilimanjaro, base camp of mt. everest). During passover i hiked part of the shvil yisrel, and would like to hike the entire thing this summer. I have some questions, however:
1) everyone is telling me that it is impossible to hike during the summer. Is this true? I don't mind the heat, but, of course, i want to make sure it will be safe.
2) are there any sites that can hook me up with others hikers during the summer?
3) is the trail itself still continuous? i was reading that in Mamsh*t stream it might not be contiuous any longer.

Hi Paul,
1. It's not impossible, but it's very hard and could be dangerous. The temperatures, especially in the south, may go into the lower 100's, the terrain is quite hard, and there's not much margin of error. I usually find myself carrying 8-10 Liters A DAY during desert Hikes, and it's not unusual. So, with your exprience you're probably in a better position than most, but it won't be easy, especially if you didn't do much hot-weather-hiking before.
2. apart from this site, I have no idea.
3. The trail is continuous. The Mamsh*t Canyon (never saw a stream there apart than after the flood) is on the old trail - actually, it's quite easy, and quite boring, to get from the end of the canyon to the new trail. There is some problem near the southern end, as the military from time to time closes a section of the trail - but if you get to that point, there's easy shortcuts.

Hey Paul,
As said, and as something I believe in, nothing is impossible. But I strongly advise against hiking in the summer. The temperatures here can get to above 100 degrees F at any given day(and that is without the humidity). If you are planning to hike anyway, the northern part of the INT is the lesser of evils, since there is an abundance of shade and water resources. Not to mention nearby towns, roads, etc.
Hiking in the summer has it's own rules and it can be very dangerous if they are not followed. And I will stress this again, as someone who has hiked the entire INT in the summer, it is not recommended. Wait, if you can, for September and then start your hike. Being in the desert here in mid August is not something you want to experience.
Regarding sites, I would refer you to Google and see what you can dig up.
There is no problem regarding the continuity of the trail. The only problem I see that you may have is regarding the parts that run close to the borders. Whether it be up in the north or in the south near Eilat. Those areas might be sealed off by the military.
